Post History

In March 2006, two members of the American Legion state membership team met with Vince Davis, the President of the Queen Creek Chamber of Commerce, to ask whether he knew any veterans in Queen Creek who could organize a group to start a new American Legion Post.  A call was made, and the process was started.

At the first meeting, it was decided to organize a Post as soon as fifteen servicemen and women who had never been in the American Legion previously had indicated their desire to start the Post.

The attending Veterans decided to file an application for an American Legion Post.  At the next meeting, a Certificate of Application for a Charter was presented.

On Flag Day, June 14th, 2026, the Queen Creek American Legion Post #129 was chartered by the national organization.

A committee was formed to name the Post, and the Post was named "Queen Creek American Legion Post 129”.

Permanent organization was affected at the next meeting, when permanent officers were elected. The first officers of American Legion Post were: Commander: Craig Barnes, Vice Commander: David Silver, and Adjutant: Erin Sanders, etc.

The post was called on to present the Colors to the family of Duane Ellsworth, and stories were told of his time in the service.

On _______, the Post members came together and decided to change the Post's name to Duane Ellsworth Post 129 to honor this brave veteran and a member of one of the town's founding families.  Duane was a tank Commander in WWII under Gen. George Patton.

The decision to organize an American Legion Post resulted from these Veterans' conclusion that the American Legion was the representative Veterans' organization in this country. That conclusion has been proven true: today, the American Legion is the largest wartime Veterans' organization, with nearly 13,000 American Legion Posts worldwide. Current national membership is over 2 million, and combined with the American Legion Auxiliary and the Sons of The American Legion, membership in what is known as The American Legion Family exceeds 3 million people who care about America, Veterans, their families, and our nation's youth.

Patriotic Days

MEMORIAL DAY is an outstanding occasion in this community. In addition to memorial events throughout the Queen Creek community, the goal of every Veteran to their last service member is to keep MEMORIAL DAY sacred to the memory of our war dead of all of the wars of the country; and all graves are decorated on this National Holiday.  Annually, San Tan Memorial Gardens has sponsored the Memorial Day Event. An important tradition was established when the Post was asked to speak and raise the Colors of our great nation on the last Monday morning in May.

ARMISTICE DAY, now called VETERANS' DAY, originally marked the end of fighting in World War I. It is an important holiday on the calendar of Legionnaires everywhere and in the hearts of all Veterans.  Annually, San Tan Memorial Gardens has sponsored the Veterans Day Event. An important tradition was established when the Post led in the Veterans Day exercises at 11 o'clock in the morning of November 11, marking the exact hour of the cessation of hostilities on the war fronts.
